August 5th 2017 marks the middle of the Whitehead Summer Festival which spans two weeks of family entertainment and fun. The traditional Food & Folk festival will take place on the recreation ground in the town where your taste buds can delight in many things from local beers, confectionery, hand bakes, jams and hot foods whilst enjoying traditional folk and bluegrass music. This year’s musicians include Darryl McCabe, Shindig, Hillbilly Biltong Band and Mike Wilgar Blues Band
The little ones will have fun playing on the bouncy castle or heading to the park to see what they can discover in their imagination. Measure yourself against the giant chess board and put your game face on against your challenger. Beware of being the one that pulls the giant jenga block that causes the crashing tumble!
Children of all ages from 1-99 can listen to tales of the Witches of Islandmagee or the adventures of Skye from the renowned local authors Luan Ingram and Hilary Bailey. For the bigger kids, aka >18, folk tales will come life in the Library, told and animated by local historians and writers.
Come along and meet our furry friends from Phil’s farm, and amaze yourself with birds of prey from the School of Falconry. With beautiful falcons, owls, llamas, and guinea pigs, everyone will have an opportunity to become Dr Doolittle and talk to the animals!
Whitehead Steam Railway will be offering its unique visitor experience of touring the station and offering steam train rides throughout the day. They even have a dressing up area for us kids to get in to the spirit of things!
A ‘first’ in Northern Ireland, Whitehead will play host to the prestigious YarnFolk Wool Festival. The festival is the ultimate fibre creative day out, with focus on appreciating the beauty, quality and variety of hand crafted products.
Several venues throughout the town will be full to the brim with stunning hand picked exhibitors, demonstrations, workshops and more, led by the most renowned experts in the field of fibre from both far and near. Skein Queen, and Travel Knitter are just two of the legendary fibre companies you can look forward to seeing amongst many others, as well as all your favourite Indie Wool dyers showcasing their fabulous talents. From luxurious hand dyed fibre to lovingly hand crafted accessories, these talented designers and crafters will promote an enviable range of unique and exclusive materials to tempt you to try something new and fill your bags with plenty of fibre goodies.
